What age should my child start swimming lessons?

At Northern Arena, our baby and toddler swimming lessons are designed for children aged 2–36 months, with a parent or caregiver joining them in the water.Starting young helps children become familiar and comfortable in the water through positive, age-appropriate experiences. As they grow, lessons progressively develop independence, water confidence and swimming skills.

How do I know which swimming level my child needs?

You don't need to know, we'll help you find the right level.Northern Arena swimming lessons are based on your child's current swimming ability and skills, rather than age alone. For children aged 3+, we can assess their swimming ability and recommend the most appropriate class and level.If your child has never had swimming lessons before, that's absolutely fine too. How many children are in a swimming class?

We keep our learn-to-swim classes small so swimmers receive plenty of attention, instruction and active time in the water.Class sizes vary depending on the swimmer's age, ability and programme, with younger and less experienced swimmers requiring greater teacher support.Our focus isn't simply on fitting children into a class, it's creating an environment where they can learn, practise and progress.

How long are children's swimming lessons?

Most Northern Arena learn-to-swim lessons are 30 minutes, providing enough time for focused teaching and repetition while keeping lessons engaging for younger swimmers.Lesson duration can vary for more advanced swimming levels, squads and specialist programmes as swimmers progress through the Northern Arena pathway.

What should my child bring to swimming lessons?

Keep it simple. Your child will need swimwear and a towel and a swim cap, goggles are recommended for many swimming levels.Depending on their programme or level, there may be additional equipment that's useful. Our Swim School team can let you know what your swimmer needs when they enrol.Most importantly, arrive with enough time for your child to get changed and feel relaxed before their lesson begins.

Can my child move swimming levels during the term?

Yes. They don't have to wait until the end of a term.Northern Arena uses a progressive learn-to-swim system. When your child has achieved the required skills and is ready for their next challenge, they can progress to the next swimming level.This means swimmers can develop at their own pace, rather than being held back by fixed-term progression dates. The only exception to this is our Baby & Toddler levels (under 3's) who are assessed each quarter.

What happens if my child is nervous or scared of the water?

That's completely okay, building water confidence is an important part of learning to swim.Our teachers work with swimmers at their current level of confidence and gradually introduce new skills in a positive and supportive environment. For a nervous swimmer, success might initially mean putting their face in the water, floating independently or simply becoming comfortable in the pool.We don't expect every child to progress in exactly the same way. Small steps can lead to big confidence.

Do you offer swimming lessons for adults?

Yes. It's never too late to learn to swim.Northern Arena offers adult swimming lessons for people with different abilities and goals from adults who aren't yet comfortable in the water through to swimmers wanting to improve their freestyle, breathing, technique or fitness.Our focus is on creating a supportive environment where adults can develop confidence and swimming skills at their own pace.
