Mark Saunders

Director of Swimming and Swim Teacher

Mark Saunders Director of Swimming at Northern Arena is unrivaled in swim teaching in New Zealand with over 40 years experience of teaching swimming. Mark’s knowledge and experience was recognised in 2013 when he was presented The Oustanding Service to the Swimming Industry Award by New Zealand Swim Coaches and Teachers Association [NZSCTA].  His played a pivital role in helping Northern Arena win Swim School of The Year 2012 and 2013 aso awarded by NZSCTA.  He previously won this award in 2008 and 2009 where he was Co-Owner/ Director of Swimtastic.

Mark, a graduate of Otago University School of Physical Education was a New Zealand Swimming Representative before going on to be the manager of the New Zealand Swim Team from 1999 to 2008.  This included managing the NZ team through World Champs, Manchester & Melbourne Commonwealth Games and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Mark’s love of swimming, commitment and belief that everyone should have the opportunity to learn to swim is reflected in his achievements outside of competitive swimming.  Mark, former National Education Manager for Swimming NZ introduced “Teaching swimmers with a disability” course for Swimming NZ.  He is currently a board member NZ Swim Coaches and Teachers Association and has been awarded New Zealand’s highest swim teacher award: Master Swim Teacher.

Mark strives to break new ground in swim teaching as he continues to develop and expand the Northern Arena Swim School program, with staff development and teaching techniques. You will also see Mark enjoying the water himself as a swim instructor and regularly swimming in our Swim Fit sessions.

Dean Kent

Head of Swimming and Swim Teacher

Born in Palmerston North, New Zealand, Dean’s passion with the water began in Levin competitive swimming and surf lifesaving aged 8 before moving to North Shore swimming club and Mirangi Bay Surf Lifesaving Club.

Dean Kent, 3-time Olympic swimmer for New Zealand represented New Zealand at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic games. Dean competed for New Zealand at the 2006 at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games where he won a Silver medal in the 200m Individual Medley [IM] and the 2007 World Championship.

During Dean Kent’s competitive swimming career he was New Zealand Champion for 400 IM for 11 years in a row and New Zealand Champion for 200 IM for 10 years in a row and still holds the New Zealand swimming records in the 200 and 400 Individual Medleys as of September 2012.  At this time Dean Kent continued his surf lifesaving commitments and twice represented New Zealand at Surf Lifesaving World Championships.

Dean Kent is now the Head of Swimming at Northern Arena Learn to Swim and Fitness Facility, Silverdale, Auckland, New Zealand. Dean’s role both in and out of the water involves managing and teaching the learn to swim school. Dean is passionate and dedicated to teaching kids the skills to swim, survive and enjoy any activity in the water.  His passion, talent and ability to do this was recognised when he was awarded with Swim Teacher of the Year 2012 awarded by New Zealand Swim Coaches and Teachers Association [NZSCTA].

 

Michael Weston

Swim School Manager

Auckland born and bred, Michael Weston has been involved in swimming in both the competitive scene swimming for North Shore Swimming and West Auckland Aquatics, and learn to swim, having taught since he was 15 years old.

Michael has a Bachelor’s degree in science, majoring in exercise physiology and sport science, a sports management diploma and is currently undertaking his MBa at Massey University.

Michael is a current board member of New Zealand Swim Coaches and Teachers association (NZSCTA), specialising in Strategy, Change Management, and Partnerships.

Michael is known for his strict teaching style, but projects his passion and dedication for both swimming and the need for children to learn to swim as he teaches. Michael Weston’s skill and capacity to teach swimming was recognised by NZSCTA in 2013 when he was awarded with Swim Teacher of the Year.
