Schools Programme & Swimming Sports

At Northern Arena we believe that learning to swim is as important as learning to read and write.

The purpose built swimming pools depths are 0.9m – 1.1m in the seven lane pool and 1.1-1.35m in the eight lane pool and sit around a temperature of 28 degrees. The pools are immaculately clean and are filtered with UV light, reducing the amount of chlorine needed to a minute 0.01% (Typical pools are 0.7%). Our crisp and clean seven lane swimming pool can cater from 20 to 500 children at a time and both our seven and eight lane swimming pools are available for hire for school swimming sports and interschool carnivals.

Schools Learn to Swim Program

Our unique Schools Learn to Swim program is aimed at teaching children from years 1-9 to swim competently to survive.

The core of the swimming lessons is based around swimming technique and swimming strokes. Also encompassed within the schools learn to swim program is a comprehensive and practical boat and water safety module supported and endorsed by Coastguard NZ.  With schools in mind, the Northern Arena School Water Safety and Boat Safety Programme enhances confidence in the water with key survival skills including:

- Floating
- Treading Water (in calm and moving water)
- Swimming to safety
- Submersion’s and searching
- Unaided entry and exits
- Life jackets education, skills and practices including ‘HELP’ (Heat Escape Lessening Posture)
- Boat education, skills and practices
- Boat practices in Clothing (T-Shirt and Board Shorts) and life jackets for those who require one. (We will only put on life jackets for students that cannot touch the floor or are not confident out of their depth.

The program adjusts distances for each child’s ability.

We run our schools learn to swim program over ten x 30min sessions for a two week period or for our older students five x one hour sessions over a one week period. We can also tailor our structure to meet your schools requirements.

School Swimming Sports Day

Let Northern Arena Learn to Swim School host your school swimming sports day. Our state-of-the-art facility can easily cater for groups from 20 to 500 children.

Our 8 lane swimming pool is separate from our other learn to swim pools so your swimming sports carnival can be held privately.  The swimming pool area is designed for viewing pleasure with elevated, tiered seating available for over 300 students, parents, grandparents, friends and family to watch the swimming races. (options of extra seating available).

The enclosed swimming pool area also has its very own PA system complete with microphone which allows you to communicate efficiently with the crowd.

We can provide all the gear you need to make your day stress-free and run as smoothly as possible.  We can provide a highly trained lifeguard, use of recording tables, extra chairs for timekeepers and spectators and we can organize the use of starting equipment.

Hire fees for the eight lane swimming pool start at $150.00 per hour (plus GST). We are flexible with times allowing you to maximize your day swimming at Northern Arena.

Testimonials

Some of the Schools participating in our program currently include Kristin School, Red Beach School and Pinehurst Primary and here is what one school teacher has to say about Northern Arena

“This year was our first experience in sending the whole school to swimming lessons with an external provider. We chose Northern Arena after looking at what each local swim school had to offer, how accessible it was price wise, and also proximity to our school.

The whole experience has been very successful for us. The students went every day for two weeks and thoroughly enjoyed their lessons. The facilities are excellent and the organisation was thorough. Each day the Schools Programme Co-ordinator, was on hand to meet us from the bus and help the teachers in any way. The Co-ordinator was enthusiastic, cheerful and positive with the students, ensuring the smooth running of the programme at all times.

The progress many of our students made, from having a swimming intensive, using committed instructors and the latest methods, was outstanding. They were carefully leveled into ability groups and the instructors quickly knew all the students names and encouraged them to try new skills.

I found them very easy to work with, communication was clear and straightforward and any questions were quickly answered.
I have no hesitation in recommending Northern Arena, the team to any other school thinking about taking part in the programme. It is extremely well organised and every teacher without exception thought it very worthwhile, even the initially hesitant teachers of the junior classes. We have booked in again for next year.”
Sherryl Prangley, Deputy Principal, Oteha Valley School

“I couldn’t fault your team. Indeed if you could pass on to your team that the venue, the systems, the acoustics, the ability to borrow gear (microphone especially), the life guarding and just the whole delivery, was the best experience we have had for our kids in the last 7 years. 10/10.”
M. Bowyer Kristin Junior School

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for a great swimming gala, it ran so smoothly… It was definitely a highlight for our kids to see the adults swim with them in their house relays, also having your staff swimming along with was brilliant. I have had nothing but praise reaped upon the venue and how supportive you all are at Northern Arena.”
G. Savage Silverdale Primary School

“A very enjoyable experience. Well organized and stress free!”
J. Watt Red Beach School

“Thanks again for accommodating our school to help run a wonderful swimming Gala. We would love to use the facility again for next year.”
G. Savage Silverdale School

“Thank you for such a great day on Thursday, you certainly take the stress out of this event for me and for many others I am sure. It is a pleasure to deal with you and the Northern Arena staff.”
N. Clark Kingsway School.

“The programme was so well organized! There was a clear system that was very easy to follow. It was great having the staff there to organize parents, do assessments on the children, and make sure we were happy with everything. The co-ordinator communicated with me daily and was a big factor in why this was such a successful and enjoyable programme. The children made great progress and the staff learnt the children’s names and praised them when she saw great efforts. All instructors were great with the children and pushed them individually.”
K. Fearon Red Beach School

“It is my absolute pleasure to write this reference in support of Northern Arena’s swimming programme… The message and skill building was delivered clearly and competently in a ‘child friendly’ manner.”
Teachers who participated commented:
“The Northern Arena presents a professional, well organized programme”.
“The children were quickly assessed and directed into appropriate learning groups, instructions and expectations were delivered clearly by the tutors using the child’s name”.
“Our children looked forward to the instruction every day and were excited by their progress over the 2 weeks.”
“They loved the water safety part of the programme as it was presented in a way that involved maximum participation with heaps of fun”.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Northern Arena, their programme and their dedicated professionals who facilitate this programme.”
Lesley Tait Red Beach School Principal

“We found the organization of this whole school programme, which involved 350 children, extremely well managed. The staff expertly catered for the learning needs of our year 0-1′s and special needs children to our club swimmers and Year 7-8′s. All students were challenged and progressed remarkably in their swimming skills and water safety knowledge over their daily lessons. We found the children became better decision makers about their behaviour in and around water as they grew in confidence with the safety challenges they were expertly guided through.  We have already booked our school in for a repeat of this programme next year. We fully support the nomination of the Northern Arena for this Water Safety award.”
Karl Hobman. Lead Learner for Sport and P.E Stella Maris Catholic Primary School

“Our school held the first event of it’s kind – a swimming competition for our kids – awesome fun – all the kids loved it – topped off at the end by Dean Kent challenging the kids to a relay – awesome fun – Dean was so generous with his time and did TONS of autographs – excellent day – thanks so much – small point – if there are is a planned event like this – maybe stock the cafe up a bit.”

“Thank you so much for all your help too.  We didn’t get this sort of service at our old swimming pool.  Thanks to our lifeguard as well.”
E. Miller Orewa College

“Many thanks for your support yesterday in ensuring that our day at Northern Arena went smoothly.  The parent feed we have received has been very positive and my team were very pleased with how the day ran.”
C. Augustin Sports Co-ordinator Pinehurst School.

“Just wanted to say thanks to you for your support and professional way in which you approached our day in particular. Is a stressful job for you at times but I have appreciated your calmness and organisation! You are in the right job!!  Thanks.”
Nikki – Kingsway School
